Default New and need some tips

The name is FuzzyGrunt Just started to play the game. Fortunately my brother already had the game so I didnt had to buy it myself ^^

Uhm so yea I think I just got past the part that people call pre-search. Im a Necromancer/Elementalist but I honestly have no idea which skills I should choose to make a good combo out of these two professions. I really want to be N/E so please dont say switch to profession X because I want to keep these two professions. Right now Ive got some elementalist skills that are meant to do some good damage (f.e. fire storm) and Ive got some Necromancer skills that restore my energy

Btw I have the Prophecies and Eye of the North discs.

And on a side note if anyone got the Prophecies disc and is new too (or if you have a new character) feel free to send me a friend request so we can do some quests together

For PvE, it really doesn't matter what build you are running. Run something you enjoy, and as soon as you hit a dead end, just swap some skills. There is nothing you 'should' do.

If anything, I should stay away from PvXwiki or any such site that presents you with 1000+ build possibilities, because you'll only end up the same as any other Necromancer ingame. Half the fun of GW is thinking up your own builds, with it's unique skill combinations.

Oh, and welcome to Guild Wars!

Welcome to Guild Wars!

As Arduina said, do not worry too much about your skillbar at the beginning. Make sure you read the skill description (by hovering over the skill icon), you can play with the attribute window (type "k") to see how attributes change the green numbers in the skill descriptions. And when you hit monsters, look at the numbers above their head, and yours too: yellow ones are damage, pink/violet ones are energy.

With time, you'll learn how complex the skill system is in GW and you'll start asking questions about enchantment, interrupts, skill synergy, etc. But feel free to ask any question here, you'll find many people to help you!

And try to join a guild, you can find some here:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/f...play.php?f=267
You can advertise yourself there:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/f...play.php?f=268
Be careful not to jump on the first guild offer, you can also look in the "capitals" (Ascalon, Lion's Arch when you'll reach it) where people recruit for their guilds.

Have Fun!

The problem is that there are no good builds for the n/e profession combo. The ele skills have no synergy with the necro skills. This is not a big problem at low levels, but as you progress in the game, you will notice that the expensive (energy-wise) ele skills are hampering you.

You will be able to change your profession when you reach the Crystal Desert area. Until then you might want to concentrate on Minion Master as it only requires a few skills and your secondary is not important.

Here is a link to the basics thread in the Campfire section Necromancer subforum

While true, you can still use the "energy management" skills to increase your energy pool, or "earth" which has a lot of protection skills for you and your MM army.

The guy is starting, so I guess we should mention the under-optimal combination while still encouraging him to continue to try to discover the potential of his character .

yeah, best bet is to join a good guild/alliance and just run whatever build you enjoy, until you get to hard mode it makes little difference. If you want to run necro/ele i would roll with a bar pretty much full of fire skills with signet of lost souls (soul reaping) and then spec into fire and soul reaping. soul reaping should be enough to keep your energy going.

If you need any advice about the game then just drop me a pm (IGN: Divine Paranon) and i will try and answer any questions you have

Necromancers are a support class,an important point to remember. They don't really deal direct damage, moreso buff the parties damage via hexing,by removing blocking stances and so on Right now though, low level builds aren't so decent but fire magic will tide you over pretty easily until later in the game,it will get much harder. You could probably happily run(later on)

Spiteful Spirit-Mark of pain-Barbs-Enfeebling blood-Glyph of lesser energy-Signet of lost souls-

Optionals:
Ward against melee (core)
Ward against foes (core)
Atrophy (Eotn)
Defile defenses(Eotn)
Hexer's Vigor(Eotn)

Darcy gave you an important link. The Necromancer guide which while a tad outdated should provide you with enough info. You can also check out the rest of the Necromancer section itself, and feel free to ask more questions.

There is probably more but time to reply is stretched.

@Paranon: You should know better than to tell a new player to fill his/her bar with fire magic skills.Shame on you <3

Welcome to GW! Some good advice has already been mentioned. I will add that Soul Reaping is a very important attribute, especially if you are running ele skills. Look at the description of Soul Reaping and you will realize that the higher your Soul Reaping is, the more energy you gain when things die. A good necro should rarely have energy trouble if they incorporate Soul Reaping points into their builds, even if they aren't using Soul Reaping skills.

Next: Make your way to Lion's Arch in the storyline as soon as you can. I believe that town is where necros gain access to some decent minion skills in Prophecies. (I'm not saying you need to be a minion master. But since you are new to the game, I expect you are going to find your character will become more effective/powerful once you start playing around with minion skills).

Some of the really powerful necro skills won't be available until much later in the game, unless you want to unlock them in pvp then buy elite tomes to learn them. But that costs gold.

Don't rush your way through the game. Take your time. Learn the ins and outs. If you advance too quickly, to fast, you will be overwhelmed and grow frustrated at how hard the game gets.

Pick three attributes out of the ones available to you. Put all your points in those three and pick skills from those three.

This is a good rule of thumb for your entire GW career (although some builds only use two, and some use four or more, attributes), but is even more important at your level, when you don't have many attribute points to spread around. I know it's tempting to pick out all the really juicy-sounding skills and stick them all on your bar regardless of the attribute, but you'll spread yourself too thin and be ineffective if you do.

It doesn't really matter when you're starting out which skills or attribute lines you invest in, as you don't have the full range of skills to pick and choose from until much later on unless you spend a lot of gold paying for skills instead of waiting for them as freebie quest rewards.

Soul reaping is the one attribute you shouldn't forget about even though you don't get many decent skills in that line, as you will get energy when things die equal to your soul reaping att. If you have 5 or 10 in SR, that's a free spell each time you kill something (or each time a minion dies), which is really handy.

Good luck and have fun with the game.
